Frequently Asked Questions

The Questions You’re Actually Wondering About
(and maybe a little afraid to say out loud)

Why haven’t we gotten funded yet?

The real answer:
It’s usually not about how hard you’re working - it’s about alignment. Most nonprofits I meet are applying to the wrong funders, telling a story that’s too broad, or missing some key structure behind the scenes. Once we tighten that up, things start to shift.

Are we the problem?

The real answer:
No, but your articulation, your strategy, or your experience might be.
You care deeply. You’re showing up. That’s not the issue. What you likely haven’t been given is
a clear, effective roadmap for how funding actually works and what really matters to funders.

Our programs feel a little all over the place… is that bad?

The real answer:
It’s normal. Most nonprofits grow fast out of passion, not structure. My job is to help you organize what you’re already doing so it makes sense to funders and feels better to run.

Are we too small to be taken seriously?

The real answer:
No, but we do need to position you well. Size matters less than clarity, readiness, and trust. I help you present your work in a way that shows funders you can handle and steward the investment.

Be honest… are grants even worth it?

The real answer:
They are when you stop treating them like a lottery. When there’s a real strategy behind what you’re applying for and why, grants can become a steady, meaningful part of your funding mix.

Why does fundraising feel so confusing?

The real answer:
Because no one taught you this. You were called to serve, you have a heart for your mission - not to decode funding language, build logic models, and track outcomes. That confusion isn’t a failure. It’s just a gap we can close because that’s what I was called to do.

What if we’re not ready… but we need money now?

The real answer:
That’s the tension almost every nonprofit lives in. We can work on developing funding streams while also strengthening what’s behind the scenes. Grants aren’t the only option, and they aren’t always the best option - but skipping the foundation completely usually creates more stress later.

Will you tell us if something isn’t working?

The real answer:
Yes. Gently, but clearly. You deserve honesty, and you deserve someone who can help you fix what’s not working, not just point it out.

Do you just write what we give you?

The real answer:

No, and that’s a good thing. I’m going to ask questions, connect dots, and sometimes challenge what’s not clear yet. That’s how we turn your work into something fundable. I access grant databases to find the best grants for your needs – as well as strategize other funding options.

We’re exhausted. Is it even worth trying to fix this right now?

The real answer:
That exhaustion is exactly why this matters. The goal isn’t to pile more on you! The goal is to create systems and strategies that actually lighten the load over time. I have been where you are, and I have lived what you’re living. I want to make it better.

Is hiring you a luxury?

The real answer:
No - it’s a decision to stop spinning your wheels. Time, missed opportunities, and burnout are expensive. Getting the right support changes that trajectory.

What’s the biggest mistake nonprofits make?

The real answer:
Chasing money instead of building a plan. When everything feels urgent, nothing works well. Strategy brings focus and, honestly, a lot more peace.

What if we’ve been doing it “wrong”?

The real answer:
Then you’re in very good company. There’s no shame here. We just shift, adjust, and move forward with a better approach.

What happens if we don’t change anything?

The real answer:
You’ll probably stay stuck in the same cycle of scrambling, second-guessing, and feeling behind. And I have a feeling you’re ready for something different. Something more effective. Something you can be proud of!

How do we know if you’re the right fit with you as our grant writer?

The real answer:
If you want someone to quietly write a grant and disappear, I’m probably not your person. If you want a partner who will think with you, guide you, and help you grow into the next version of your organization, we’ll get along just fine. I have spent 27 years in and around nonprofit organizations, and it is an honor to do work that empowers organizations to serve people on the margins.
